HOT TAKE: A Brand Shoot Without a Plan Is Just a Fancy Selfie Session.

A Strategic Shoot Is 75% Planning, 25% Camera.

A Strategic Shoot Is 75% Planning, 25% Camera.

What will not cut it? A few headshots here, a picture with the laptop there, and a nice coffee shot for good measure.

A proper shot list is so much more. It’s the strategic blueprint that ensures your photos aren’t just pretty pictures—they’re powerful tools that actually move your business forward. A shot list is the visual answer to all the questions we’ve already answered about your brand’s core.

So, before we even think about snapping a photo, we get to work.

Phase 1: The Foundation That Changes Everything

The magic happens long before the camera comes out. The shot list is a direct result of the strategic groundwork we lay together.

It’s born from the insights you pour into a deep branding questionnaire, the big-picture ideas we shape during our pre-shoot consultation, and the visual vibe we curate on a vision board. This isn’t just busy work; it’s the non-negotiable strategy that ensures every single photo is intentional, on-brand, and actually serves a purpose. It’s the difference between a random photo session and a strategic content-generating machine.

Phase 2: The Four-Part System for a “Bajillion” Images

Once we have that solid foundation for your brand shoot, we get to work on the shot list itself. It’s a detailed plan of attack, broken down into four essential segments that will provide you with a robust, versatile library of images for every part of your business.

1. Portraits:

This is more than a headshot. We capture your personality + the personality of your brand. We’re telling your audience what it’s like to work with you, so the small details of even a simple portrait are up for discussion! What’s the color of your blouse? Is your makeup bold? Is the environment minimalist, natural, modern?

2. Activity (Your hands in the work!):

Enough with the posing! We’ll capture you in your element—actually doing what you do best. These photos show your process, your expertise, and the passion behind the scenes. They give your audience a reason to trust you, because they can see you in action, and that will def put them at ease.

3. Lifestyle (The Business Out in the Wild):

This is where we show your service or product in the real world. We tell the story of what it’s like to be your client, or what your product looks like out “in the wild.” These shots are all about creating a relatable, aspirational vision for your audience. They answer the question, “what’s it look like to be involved with this brand?”

4. Flatlays and Textures/Tools:

These are the details that tie everything together. We’ll capture your tools, products, and textures from your brand’s world. These images are perfect for social media fillers, blog post headers or background texture, email marketing, and print marketing—providing so many ways to sprinkle your brand’s essence everywhere.

The Payoff: A Visual Toolbox for Your Brand Shoot

When these four segments come together, you don’t just get a few good photos. You get a comprehensive visual toolbox that’s ready to work for you. From your website and social media to your print marketing, you’ll have a cohesive, authentic, and strategic library of images that will elevate your brand and help you stand out. That’s the power of a shot list that’s a blueprint, not a to-do list.

It starts with that most exploratory part of the process – the deep dive into the brand questionnaire. I swear, the feedback I get on these brand surveys from people who learn more about themselves, their business, their goals is really an immediate reward to the business owner.
